Councils add derelict sites to their registers and take repaired ones off, then republish. Here is what has moved lately, and how up to date each council’s register is.

How up to date is each register?

The date each council last published, freshest first. The Derelict Sites Act requires councils to keep a register, but sets no schedule for republishing it, so some sit untouched for a long while.

“Entries” is what the council’s register lists; “on the map” is what we place from it. The two differ where one register line covers several properties, which we split into a pin each, or where an address is too vague to place at all. Where a council puts no date on its register, we show when we last read it instead.

How we keep track

Every register is re-read and compared with the copy behind the map. Councils publish in four different ways, so each is asked on its own terms. This only ever reads: it never edits the map.

Live map layer

We ask the layer when it was last edited and how many records it holds, and compare both with the copy we archived.

Open-data file

We download the file and compare it byte for byte with our archived copy, so a quiet correction still shows up.

PDF or spreadsheet

We re-read the council’s page, because a new register usually appears beside the old one at a new address with a new date in its name.

Web page table

We re-read the page and count the register rows listed on it.

Links worth a look

These councils’ registers still download fine, but the page we link to from the map did not answer us. Usually that means the council has reorganised its website.

  • Carlow returned a not-found error, so the page has most likely moved.
  • Donegal returned a not-found error, so the page has most likely moved.
  • Laois returned a not-found error, so the page has most likely moved.
  • Limerick City and County returned a not-found error, so the page has most likely moved.
  • Tipperary refused an automated request, which is often a website turning robots away rather than a dead page.
