Reported ability to speak Irish

Percentage of people aged 3 and over who reported that they could speak Irish. This measures self-reported ability, not fluency or regular use.

Data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), data.cso.ie.

Census questions and definitions changed over time, so comparisons between distant years should be interpreted cautiously. Older censuses measured Irish differently, and the CSO notes that results such as 1926 and 2022 are not directly comparable. A new question series also began in 1996.
